Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

New Jersey's cemeteries each govern their own monument rules, and those rules vary meaningfully across municipal, religious, and private grounds. Tombstone Store verifies the current regulations of the receiving cemetery before any fabrication begins — confirming permitted heights, base dimensions, material types, and installation procedures for every order.

Foundation Requirements

Foundation quality determines how a headstone performs over decades. Tombstone Store's installation crews prepare concrete foundations to the depth and width required by each cemetery's specification, accounting for NJ's frost line so that the finished memorial remains stable through the seasonal ground movement common throughout the state.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Religious cemeteries in New Jersey — Jewish, Catholic, Orthodox, and others — each carry memorial traditions that shape what is appropriate in their sections. Tombstone Store's team is experienced with the full range of NJ religious cemetery requirements, from the simplicity often preferred in Jewish grounds to the wider design vocabulary of Catholic and Protestant sections.

Headstones for Sale

Every headstone Tombstone Store produces is a custom order. There is no catalog to flip through and no standard stone to accept as-is; each memorial is designed with the family around the specific cemetery's requirements and the specific life being honored. Hand-carved granite headstones from Tombstone Store are available in upright, slant, and flat formats, each produced from American-made granite in our Morris County workshop. Granite colors span Classic Black, Jet Black, Balmoral Red, Blue Pearl, Mountain Gray, Absolute Gray, and others. Inscription options include simple typographic layouts, portrait engravings from photographs, military insignia, religious imagery, and custom relief carvings. All of these elements are drafted into a scaled proof that the family reviews and approves before any carving begins. Our artisans have spent 80+ years refining the techniques — sandblasting stencils, rotary engraving, hand chisels — that produce the clean, lasting results Tombstone Store's memorials are known for. The process is personal from the first conversation to the final installation, and it reflects the commitment to craftsmanship and family service that has sustained Tombstone Store across eight decades of New Jersey cemetery work.

Granite Options

Tombstone Store's granite selection covers the full range preferred by NJ families. Classic Black and Jet Black offer the highest contrast for polished-face engravings, a quality most families find important for long-term legibility. Mountain Gray and Absolute Gray provide a quieter, universally accepted aesthetic. Balmoral Red and Blue Pearl are for families who want a distinctive mineral character in the stone. All granite is American-made.

Custom Design Process

Tombstone Store does not produce headstones from a template. Every design begins with a consultation — in our Morris County showroom, by phone, or via email — during which a specialist works with the family to understand the person being remembered and to develop an inscription, imagery, and design layout tailored to that individual. The resulting proof is reviewed, revised if needed, and approved by the family before carving begins.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

The process at Tombstone Store begins with a consultation and ends with the stone in place at the cemetery. Step one is consultation: a specialist meets with the family to learn about the person, the cemetery, and the family's vision for the memorial. Step two is cemetery verification: Tombstone Store contacts the cemetery office to confirm current regulations covering the planned memorial type. Step three is material selection: granite color, finish, and dimensions are chosen with the family. Step four is design drafting: Morris County artisans prepare a scaled proof incorporating all text, symbols, and imagery. Step five is hand-carving: once the family approves the proof in writing, craftsmen engrave the American-made granite using methods refined over 80+ years in our workshop. Step six is installation: Tombstone Store delivers, prepares the foundation, and sets the finished stone to cemetery specification. Most headstones are completed within eight to twelve weeks.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

If you do not see your question here, call us.

How long does it take to design and install a headstones?

From initial consultation to cemetery installation, Tombstone Store headstones are typically completed within eight to twelve weeks. That includes design drafting, family approval, hand-carving in our Morris County workshop, and coordination with the cemetery for installation. We give every family a realistic estimate at the outset, not an optimistic guess.

Do you serve cemeteries throughout New Jersey?

Yes. Tombstone Store serves all 14 New Jersey counties from our Morris County headquarters. We handle delivery and professional installation at cemeteries throughout Bergen, Essex, Passaic, Hudson, Union, Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon, Somerset, Middlesex, Mercer, Monmouth, and Ocean counties — coordinating every step directly with the cemetery office.

Are your memorials cemetery-compliant?

Yes. Before any stone is cut, Tombstone Store verifies the receiving cemetery's current regulations — permitted height, base dimensions, acceptable finish types, and installation scheduling. Cemetery-compliant specifications are confirmed in writing before fabrication begins, protecting the family's investment and ensuring smooth installation.

Can I bring my own design or photo?

Absolutely. Families regularly bring photographs, hand-drawn sketches, military insignia, religious artwork, or personal poetry. Our Morris County artisans incorporate all personal materials into a scaled design proof, which the family reviews and approves before any carving begins. Revisions are a normal part of the process.

Do you offer veteran companion markers?

Yes. Tombstone Store creates veteran memorial configurations incorporating branch insignia, rank designations, service dates, and authorized emblems. Companion stones honoring a veteran alongside a spouse are also available. We meet national cemetery dimension standards when required.
